WANT TO LEARN HOW TO BREAK DANCE?
- Part 2 -

Okay... now it became decision time. Here I was getting ready to graduate high
school. Should I go to college? hmmm... good question.... if you asked my teachers they would have told you yes Mike is definitely going he 's got a future in journalism he's shown leadership qualities and every one needs to go to college.....if you asked my soccer coach he would say he's got to go he's been awarded most valuable senior player, selected on the all metro team and he has a full scholarship to go play college soccer he'd be crazy not to go....Well then call me crazy... but I picked breaking and show business (again I'm not saying don't go to college, it just wasn't my choice) So let's see where I'm at...I'm 18 not going to college, turned down my scholarship chosing to be a professional breakdancer getting ready to move out on my own apartment with no other job training...so okay... I'd say it's a little risky, but it was my choice...good or bad I would have to live with it. I was still performing at the night club 5 - 7 nights a week it seemed like nothing could stop the momentum...then it happened our group was told because of attendance at the club we would be cut to 2-3 nights a week...let's just say OUCHHH!! Here is lesson number 1 in being Pro when things are good save your money, I wish I would of known that lesson then. This was about 5 months after graduating, money was very tight but I still had my dream. It was really put to the test one day when dropping my girlfriend off at my High School (she was a senior still in school) It would just happen that I ran into some of the guys from the soccer team who were now Seniors they were really happy to see me and we're like soooooo you must be doing really well now. Well I told them things were alright, although I knew they could be better and I had no idea what direction my breaking career choice was leading. And now to top it off, up walked my soccer coach... first thing he says is guess what Mike?... the college had called just the other day to see if he could get in touch with me and they were still interested in me coming to play soccer. Okay lesson number 2... I have a belief that when you go after what you want things get really challenging just to test you to see if that's what you really want and if you aren't serious you bail out. So the guys walk me to my car and and it would be the day when my car was in the shop and I was driving my girlfriends beat up oil burning smoke polluting Datsun (the car is now called Nissan for those of you that don't remember when they used to be Datsun) okay so I'm feeling really humble now and wondering if Break dancing was going to pull through or if I had made a mistake. I kept the Faith and continued. Well about a month later I read of an audition for a Mime at Sea World, okay your wondering what does being a Mime have to do with breaking? Well if you are also a popper it has everything to do with it. I didn't know how to be a MIme but I sure could pop and robot. Lesson 3...Never limit yourself! So I talk to my manager of my group who was the same man who saw me at the contest years ago and I asked him what I should do. He said go for it I have nothing to lose. I audition and I get the job, which was great because that was during the day and I still could break at night at the club to top it off a month later we increased the number of nights we did at the club. Lesson 4 remember lesson 2 and hang on... things will always work out just keep believing. So now I'm learning even more at Sea World, I learn how to juggle I learn how to perfect my mimimg I am doing shows for about 2-3 thousand people a show 4 to 6 shows a day then going to break and perform at night. The funny thing some people were coming up to me at the club saying weren't you at Sea World earlier? The breakdance group and I end up getting a contract at a new theme park in Orlando called Board Walk and Baseball and they have a stage they want us to perform on so I finished up my contract at Sea World and now I am full time Breaking. We have 5 shows at Boardwalk and Baseball then I hop into my car and drive right to work at the club for 3 more shows 6 days a week, I am 19 years old and getting ready to buy my first house. Lesson 5 remember what happened in lesson 1 and invest your money in something of value...realestate is a good thing! ..... |
